55kg opium seized in Jodhpur

JODHPUR: In a major drug haul, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized over 55 kg of opium and arrested one trafficker. A motorcycle along with a cash of Rs 3,54,675 was also seized. The opium was brought from Chittorgarh region and was to be supplied in Jodhpur for the preparation of smack. It is estimated to be worth Rs 30 lakh in the international market.

According to the zonal director of NCB, Neha Champawat, the bureau was constantly receiving general inputs that a large quantity of opium was being brought from Nimbahera-Chittorgarh region for sale in Jodhpur, part of which was to be used for making smack.

"On confirming the tip off, we mounted a surveillance camera near Kankani village on Jodhpur-Pali highway on the night of February 4. We found two motorcycle-borne persons approaching, when challenged them, the rider managed to escape but we caught the pillion rider identified as Premaram Bishnoi, who was in possession of a gunny sack," said Champawat.

On checking of the sack, the officials found four packets of opium, which according to Bishnoi was meant for sale in Jodhpur. Later, on interrogation he led the NCB sleuths to a grocery shop nearby, where five more packets of opium were recovered along with a Rs 3,54,675 cash which is believed to be kickback from the sale of opium.

"We have arrested Bishnoi and are interrogating him in order to find some crucial clues related to opium trafficking and their contacts," said Champawat. The motorcycle used by Bishnoi's accomplice was later found lying on the road side.
